Successful open access negotiations require more than strong external partnerships—they demand robust internal alignment and stakeholder buy-in.
This Moving OA Forward Focus Session showcases practical strategies for communicating to institutional leadership and building consensus on OA goals, particularly in environments where budget constraints limit the capacity for innovation or where open access is not yet a leadership priority.
Speakers Susanne Aerni, Thomas Leibundgut and Jon Shaw share how negotiators are successfully reframing open access agreements as strategic investments that serve authors, enhance research visibility, and advance long-term institutional priorities.
Their experiences highlight how this approach not only strengthens leadership engagement, but also elevates the role of the library and fosters more collaborative, cross-institutional support for open scholarship.
